A twelve gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer by the incumbent Mayor of Munich with the cry “O' zapft” ("It's tapped!") opens the Oktoberfest in Germany. So does the Indian style October fest awaits!
A 200 year old festival, to celebrate the vowed arrival of a new daughter, Crown Princess Therese, in a field, shortly post her, renamed in her honor, Theresienwiese (Theresa’s Meadow). The celebration, henceforth became an annual festival, and integrated into the rich Bavarian culture.
Munich celebrates this two century old running carnival of Beer for 16-18 days, starting, late September up till the first Sunday of October, to enjoy every ounce of freshly-brewed local Beer before winter sets in.
The event commences by the mayor presenting the first Beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. The Beer is a carefully chosen Munich Beer, which only upon passing this criterion is designated as Oktoberfest Beer.
This Carnival of Beer is the largest volksfest (people’s fair) held across all nations. Along with other many cities, Bangalore is back with The Great Indian October Fest (TGIOF 2011), our desi version of the Oktoberfest. The much-awaited event is a huge crowd magnet from all over India and is already arising speculations on its venue, its performing artists and TICKETS! Watch 2011, more coming up this Beer festival!
